National Defense Service Medal - The National Defense Service Medal is awarded for honorable active service as a member of the Armed Forces during the Korean War, Vietnam War, the war against Iraq in the Persian Gulf, and for service during the current War on Terrorism. It basically says you were on active duty during a shooting war. It's one of the first ribbons you get as an enlisted soldier. It is worn proudly, especially when you have no other decorations on your chest.
