 Dear Mom and Dad,

The 8 weeks basic start next Monday. I will be at Ft. Gordon a week for processing before basic. I have been here at Ft. Jackson one week already processing. I leave here at 2:30 for Ft. Gordon.

The DI, drill instructor, let me and some other ROTC guys drill platoons, but then he dismissed the others and gave me full charge for one whole evening. I like it here so far. You don't usually get but 5 or 6 hours sleep, but it's not bad.

I qualified for OCS in all but the very last test, quite an honor I'm told, and I missed it by only 2 points. I was told to take it in 6 months, when I should have no trouble passing and getting into OCS, officers candidate school. To go to OCS means from Private E-1 to second lieutenant in 23 weeks, or from $90 to $435 a month.

I don't think we'll have any time for calls or letters at boot camp for awhile, so write, and don't worry. I'm just real busy.
