Ken Oostenink
C/1/8 from 12-4-68 to 12-4-69, sent me this copy of a
roster he still had from his platoon.
Chad Magnuson
I was with B Co. 1/8th from January 1968 to January 1969.
Originally I was assigned to 1st Platoon as a rifleman, carried the radio for about three months and then was the
Company CO's RTO, Battalion RTO
and Commo chief for the last three months. Its funny how the names escape you after so many years.
Some of the guys I remember...
Dewey Buffington
Bob Bognetti (from Detroit)
Penny ? (from Southern California)
Ted Bateman
Gordon Goodlett
Phil Bynum (Tennesee)
Rick Pohlman
Lt. Groff (Eagle)
Lt. Palanzi (Animal)
CPT. Moore
CPT Brennan
Georgy Girl our pet monkey.
Gary Lysne
I was with the D/1/8 from Jan 69 through Jan 70. I am the policeman from Seattle. I was a SSG instant NCO
who was always with the 3rd Plt, the first month or so as a squad Ldr, and then Plt. Sgt or Plt Ldr
depending on the vacancy. When you came into the company Lt. Stephen North was brand new as 3rd Plt.
Ldr
and I was the Plt. Sgt.
Gary remembers the following individuals...
1. Capt. Caldwell, D/1/8.
2. Lt. Simmons, Plt. Ldr. I believe the 2nd.
3. Lt. North 3rd Plt. Ldr.
4. SSG Harris, my platoon Sgt. before Lt. North arrived, can't remember which Plt he went to after
Lt. North arrived, but I believe he was moved three times. I think he came to 3rd from 1st and was used
as Platoon Ldr or Sgt. also.
5. SSg Sattler, he was Plt Ldr or Sgt like me depending on vacancies of 2nd Plt. at any rate same Plt
as Lt. Simmons.
6. SGt. Bahle was squad leader in third Plt. until I left and then I think he was moved to Plt Sgt.
7. Sgt Lichtenthal
8. McNeely was a grunt, and sent back to base camp around Sept.69 to be Co. Clerk, so he has a pretty
good recollection of what was going on, Capt. Caldwell found out he could type.
9. Monguer, a rifleman from 1st Plt. I think.
10. Sgt. Nagel, who has contacted you and sent me your website, I think the 1st Plt
11. Snell, he was in weapons platoon, that was started in Oct., we never had one before that. He has a
ton of pictures on 35MM slides. He came up a couple of years ago and showed them to me, and he came into
the company about the time you did. He went down on a Chinook in Mar or April of 70 up near DAK To. I was
gone but he told me about it, when we visited. I haven't been able to reach him here of late.
12. Doc Hubbard, 3rd Platoon medic.
13. I have attempted to contact Top Madden, but can't remember his first name or
where he was from, we were very close, if you have any information about him I
would like to have it or have you send my info. to him.
14 I would also like to talk to Doc Keyes, he was the company CP medic if you have any information about
him.
15. Lt. Ponzo, was the Platoon Ldr.
16. SSG Glenn Sattler, instant NCO like me. He was the 2nd Plt. Acting Plt. Ldr or Acting Plt. Sgt.
depending on the vacancies.

D/1/8 3rd Plt from a long time ago.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Here are some additional names for Third Platoon.
Doc Hubbard 3rd Plt. Medic from around April through Dec. 69 sent me these names from the third Platoon. These lists are for the most part, last names only, as he had them in a small notebook he carried. The date was about 15 Oct. 69
The names were compiled from a couple of different lists.
We never had enough
personnel to have 4 squads in a Platoon or 4 Platoons in the Company. If my
memory is correct, this was just about the highest number of personnel that I
can ever remember having in the Third Platoon. We were seldom much more than 20
to 25 in strength. This list is actually high, because a couple of the names
listed were scratched out due to DEROS, medical or transfer, but I included
their names because I didn't want to leave anyone out. Hopefully, the names will
jog others to remember first names or where they were/are from, so that we may
be able to contact them sometime in the future. Take care and thanks for the
website.

Ray Hubbard
D/1/8 I was the 3rd platoon medic assisting Doc Keyes pull the wounded and dead back to safety during the
ambush off QL19. He and I had no cover fire with the exception of SGT Ted Bahle.
Bill Johnson
I was a draftee grunt who arrived at D/1/8 in early October 1967, and humped with 3rd platoon of that
company until I got profiled out of the Infantry…bounced around the medical labyrinth for about 6 weeks,
then got a job with 4th Div Awards & Casualties branch (4th Admin Co) where I proof-read valor
awards for a few weeks, then moved to the casualty reporting section, where I rose to NCOIC (acting E-5)
for a time, then went to 8th Field Hosp. in Nha Trang as hospital liaison.
I recall...
Capt. Raymond Sanders of D/1/8. He was a Mustang who assumed command of D Co in Feb. 68 at Dak To.
My platoon leader Eugene Lohmaier.
Tom Lacombe
Author “Light Ruck, Vietnam 1969”, about a grunt’s life in the Central Highlands.
Mack Lusk
I served with D, 1/8 Infantry in 1968. I was with the HHC at Bde as an XO prior to going to the field with Delta
Company in early 1968. CPT Sanders had just left on emergency leave and Bn made the XO (1Lt Fox) the CO, I
was 3rd Plt Ldr and joined the Company west of Kontum just after a tough firefight. It's been so long ago
I don't remember many names, Sgt Lewis was my Plt Sgt, had a squad leader by the name of Papa Rock, also
Grasshopper, and Dynamite. Believe LTC Tombaugh was the Bn CO and Col Johnson was the Bde CO, before
Col Fix. CPT Sawyer was my CO with HHC at Bde. I joined Delta as a very young inexperienced 1Lt and left
in July 1968, didn't see any significant action, Dak To and Ben Het as well as Kontum were already over. I
was lucky and came home only emotionally scared. I returned to RVN in 1969 and served with the 9th Inf in
the Delta, commanded Charlie Company for almost all my tour with the 9th then went to 3/8 Inf 4th Div for
a couple of months after the 9th redeployed. Stayed in the service until 1978 leaving as an 04
(Major) after a
miserable tour in Germany with 10th SF and a short stay as S-2 with an Armor Bde at Erlangen Germany.
Ralph McDermott
I was an 11Bravo in C Co. 1-8. I came in country in may of 67 and went to B Co., got malaria in
August
and spent over a month in Cam Rahn Bay Hospital. When I came back I was put in C
Co. and was there until DEROS
in May 68.
I remember Parker, Rollins, And Rodgers from B Company, but don't remember their first names.
Squad Leader was Hurst from Alabama was from Bravo Company.
Ralph sent me a copy of the C/1/8 Unit Roster from 2 JAN 68. Check it out. It has most of the names in country at that time.
Gary McNeely
Hi Homer, I was your Company Clerk for Delta Company until January 1970. I was a grunt the first eight
months, then Lt. John Hines wanted me to be a clerk, so I gave it a try in August 1969.
Dan Montgomery
I was in B-1-8 in April to June, 1969. I think that would mean we were in the same AO. My platoon leader was
LT Moss. He was a red head and liked to wear a green towel over his neck.
On February 21, 1970, I was in mortars, E/1/22, when we were in line as usual. Orders came to fire. This was not a drill. I was standing
directly in front of the gun. One of the artillery men, Jeffrey Thomas Beardsley, was not there when the orders
came. He came running back from the direction of the shower. The men called out their procedures like they
always do. Beardsley changed direction and ran in front of the barrel. He stopped. I had to think too long before
I ducked. I did not get hit. Beardsley was killed by the concussion of the firing.
I also remember CPT DeRoos and
Gerald E. Skislak an RTO in B-1-8, who came in country the same time I did
In April, 1969, there was a battery from 6/29 Artillery at the FSB at
the bottom of the hill where LZ Bullet was at the top.
Does anybody
remember that one?
Carl Nagel
AKA 'Pillsbury' squad leader in 1st plat Delta Co 1/8 DEROS Jan 10 '70.
You must have been the new guy who replaced Archie Caldwell.
Claude Holder was my platoon leader.
SSgt Gary Lysne was leader of 3rd plat at the time you joined company.
The last man to return from the OCT 30th ambush was a machine gunner we called "South Philly". He was young black man from the streets of
Philadelphia , who was shot to pieces. I think his name was Washington. James Herin was his assistant gunner.
Those KIA Oct 30 were.
Thomas Clark (probably on point, his usual job in 1st plat.),
Wesley Vermeesch (rifleman, very new in country),
James Herin, and
Perry Hopkins (rifleman, new along with Vermeesch).
Billy Whitlow went to NCO school at Benning. Afterward he shows up assigned to 1st Plat D 1/8. I'm fairly he was
acting 1st plat leader Oct. 30 '69. He was one of the wounded.
Jerome Parker
was WIA May 16 '69 in the same ambush when Joe Fowler was KIA. Happened south of
FSB Denise and I bet it was near the same damn hill D Co. was ambushed on
October 30.
Russell Pickering KIA Dec. 2 '69. They were ambushed no more than a klick from the Bn trains
area at Radcliff.

I have shots of Doc Hubbard, who just contacted me by E-Mail, yourself and Capt Steedly (man were you skinny),
not you Gary. Some others I remember were my RTO Stephens, Kruger, Bahle, several shots of the MACV compound we were in
for a week or so with Lt. Connell and Doc Flores. The way I figure it, you and I hooked up in the October
time frame. We camped out in the MACV village for a week or two, were in base camp, AN Khe, over Christmas,
got into that ambush, and then sometime in January, I think I went on R&R, came back and my platoon was
taken over by Lt. Chumley? If you don't remember that name, then you had left by then. I became Company Executive
Officer for awhile, and if I am not mistaken, Lt Holder took over as CO during the time of the sending
home of the Battalion.
Robert Ponzo
I was assigned to the 1/8th sometime in November 1968 and met George Callan, when he was S-1 prior to his
going to Charlie Company (I think) as a platoon leader where he was hit by a sniper. I spent about a month
at Dak To when
LTC Old (a fine leader, commander, and gentleman) was Bn Commander and
MAJ Proust the Bn S3 (Bald, Prussian looking) He was replaced by
MAJ Presley W. Kendall from the Army Rifle Team. After a few weeks of investigating accidents and incidents
within the Bn with a National Guard
MAJ named Glovas, I was assigned to Delta Company, commanded by
CPT Ted Yamashita, where I replaced
Frank Thomas as the Platoon Leader of third Platoon. The only other guys I remember from my time in Dak To are
Lieutenants Roger Pruter, S4 and
Ken Groff, S3 Ops. I think
CPT Caldwell S4, who replaced
Yamashita might have arrived at Dak To before I went to the field. I have been in on and off again contact with my
former platoon sergeant,
Gary Lysne. Another name that I remember was a Lieutenant from Bravo company when
DeRoos was CO, a guy named
James Keane from Chicago. I also contacted
Frank Thomas (I took over 3d Platoon from him in Jan/Feb69) after I spoke with you.
Gary Lysne had a call from our former Medic
"Doc" Hubbard.
more from Lt. Ponzo soon....
Daniel Rivera
I was also in the 1st. Bn. 8th Inf, however, I was assigned to Co. C in 1967.
Robert Robbins
AKA “Arkie” I was in the second platoon with Company C. I arrived in Viet Nam in
September 1968 and left for the hospital in Japan on November 4.
SFC Tommy Thompson
I arrived in-country on 8 Aug 68, becoming a PFC when my foot hit the landing strip in Cam Rahn Bay. I was
originally assigned to B Co 1/8th Inf. I believe that was on Hill 1089. A month or so later, on FSB 32, I
was moved to the mortar platoon of E Co 1/8th Inf. I was wounded on FSB 29 on
the 29th of October 1968. Larry Carpenter was wounded by the same 120mm mortar round. It landed in the doorway
of our bunker, by the 4-Deuce gun pit near the TOC. That was the same day that Charles Hazlip, of the 105mm
howitzer crew was KIA. My gun crew consisted of Carl Granger, James Floro, and Ken Holsen. A few months later, I took
over the 106mm recoilless rifle with Danny Huffman and Carl Granger took over the 4-Deuce. We manned the 106 on the
FSB at Polei Kleng and later on LZ Bullet and one other FSB by a road between LZ Bullet and Camp
Radcliff. After
that tour, I spent two out of the next three years in-country. Most of that was as a grunt (C Co 52nd Inf - Saigon
and E Co 2/1 Inf, 196th Light Infantry Brigade (mortars and recon) - Danang, Chu Lai, and Phu Bai). The rest was
as an MP (with C Co 720th MP Bn and attached to A Co 716th MP Bn - Long Binh, Lai Khe, and Saigon) guarding convoys
to just about everywhere in the Delta region and over to the Cambodian border guarding POWs, as well as
patrolling
Saigon with the Combined Police Patrol. Ironically, when my third tour-of-duty was over, I was assigned to 2/22 Inf,
4th Inf Div, at Fort Carson, CO.
MAJ John Trebbe
Maj. John Trebbe formerly S-3 of 1-8 during 1968-69. Maj Trebbe died in 2004.
His command presence saved our butts many times during his tour with the Bn TOC.
SGT Al Wall
I came to D company 1/8th at Pleiku in late Oct 1969. I came in as a Sergeant
E-5 fresh out of shake and bake school (as everyone referred to us as). We were sent to FB Schuler to do night ambushes to protect
the tanks that watched the bridges at night. My squad was one of 2 or 3 that was sent. I was with 1/8th till March 1970
when the unit was deactivated and I was transferred to 1/12th Inf, where I stayed till Sept 1970.
SFC Edward Warneld
I went to Nam on my second tour, with newly formed Co D 1/8 . Left Ft Lewis Aug 67 (McChord AFB ) on a
C-141. When we got to Dragon Mountain I was moved to the BN S-5.
I stayed with the 4th until Feb 68.
Lt. John Rochelle
I was a tech supply officer with Co. C, 704th Maintenance Bn at LZ Mary Lou. John Rochelle, 1LT Co. C, 704th
Maintenance Bn 2nd Bde (Bam Me Thout East, LZ Mary Lou) Aug 68 - May 69.
Remembered the pay officer shooting incident at FSB-Mary Lou on 18 MAR 69.
PS:
My personal thanks to all of you who contributed to this website and this names page in particular. I have often
felt guilty, that I could not remember the names of those heroic soldiers I had the
privilege of serving with in
Vietnam. I have the very, very, very, deepest respect and admiration for all of you. You guys were all heroes in
my eyes. Thank you each and every one. The bond we shared in combat is still the most cherished connection I have
to the true potential of the human race. If we could all be so honest and connected, world peace would become the
norm instead of a dream.
