Purple Heart - The Purple Heart is one of the most highly respected decorations of the US Armed Forces, because it can be earned in only one way, by being wounded as a direct result of enemy actions. Second and subsequent awards are denoted by bronze Oak Leaf Clusters; a silver Oak Leaf Cluster is worn in lieu of five bronze clusters. I was awarded my Purple Heart for the hearing damage I suffered, while commanding B/1/8 during Operation Wayne Grey.  The story is on the Flashbacks page under the section on Task Force Alpha and Hill 467. A second award for a punji stake wound, never came through, at least I never got a copy of the orders.
